Nursing
The Department of
Nursing carries the mandate to provide quality
nursing education for effective and efficient
professional nursing services, and to provide
a solid base for graduate studies through a
systemically designated curriculum.
Northern Caribbean
University, a trend setter in nursing
education is the premier and oldest
institution in Jamaica granting a Bachelor of
Science degree in Nursing. The programme
commenced in the 1970 and since then, the
department has graduated more than eight
hundred (800) nurses. These graduates possess
the expertise to function in a variety of
health care settings and are gainfully
employed locally, regionally and
internationally.
Over the years, the
department has maintained an outstanding pass
rate ranging from 83.5% to 98.6% in the
Nursing Council of Jamaica (NCJ) and Regional
Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR).
During the last five (5) years, the department
has experienced an exponential growth of over
400% in enrollment comprising local and
international students.
The importance for
nurses to be educated at the baccalaureate
level has become greater due to the shortage
of nurses worldwide, changes in demography,
epidemiology, globalization, at the focus of
the Millennium Development Goals.
